Growth with Discipline and Heart: Takeaways from The Bliss Business Podcast featuring Heather Harris

Growth brings energy to a business, but it also reveals a lot about a team. It shows whether everyone is working together, whether systems are in place, and whether the company culture can handle challenges.

These ideas were at the heart of a recent episode of The Bliss Business Podcast, where hosts Stephen Sakach and Tullio Siragusa sat down with Franchise FastLane’s CEO, Heather Harris.

1. Growth Should Be Measured in Value, Not Just Units

Heather’s main point is that franchisors should focus on keeping growth manageable. Healthy growth shows up in metrics like average unit volumes and franchise disclosure documents, not just in unit count. She compared managing growth to driving a car: “You want the accelerator and then you just want to make sure you take your foot off that gas for a minute and hit the brake.”

2. Discipline Is the Foundation, Not the Constraint

For Heather, discipline means knowing the right customer and candidate, having a clear growth plan for each region or category, and keeping operations steady as the business expands.

3. Culture Is Built in the Micro-Actions, Not the Mission Statement

A key moment in the conversation was Heather’s view on culture: “Culture is not just your values, but it’s how your team relates to those values.” She stressed the importance of open, honest communication with franchisees, understanding where each person is in their journey, and making sure everyone in the company feels confident speaking up when something isn’t working.

Heather applied that same approach at Franchise FastLane. She talked about regularly walking around the office asking her team what they are working on, especially as the company was bringing in several new brands at once.

She pointed to the values on FFL’s wall, “have your back, work with grit,” and said what stood out to her when joining was that the team truly follows them every day: “I’ve seen this organization… I can tell you it’s real.”

4. The Right Candidate Is Everything

One idea kept coming up: finding the right match between owner and brand. At Franchise FastLane, this is a two-way street. It’s not just about finding someone who suits the brand, but you need to make sure the brand truly suits them.

Heather shared that sometimes this means holding out for the right person or looking for a better match in the same area, because the chosen operator becomes the face of the brand in their neighborhood. As she said, “The operator is going to be that reflection in their community, and that reflection only shines when both sides are in sync.”

5. Leadership Rooted in Trust

Drawing on her background as a two-sport college athlete, Heather connects coaching to leadership. Describing her approach to joining a new organization, she said, “I’ve asked the organization to trust me through this change and it’s all for the benefit of the brands.” She summed up her philosophy this way: “You’re not going to get people to fly by clipping their wings. You’re gonna get people to fly by giving them wings.”

That belief in people is also why Franchise FastLane is so deliberate about candidate fit. Heather recalled strangers stopping her to say a brand had changed their life, “Your brand really changed the way I thought about things.” That’s the impact FFL looks for in an owner: someone who can create that same change for their customers, employees, and community.

Bringing It All Together

A clear thread ran through the conversation: true, lasting growth is built on a solid foundation. Heather returned again and again to the need for steady pacing, open and honest communication to safeguard company culture, and the power of aligning owners with their brands.

Her practical advice for founders eyeing growth: weigh the pros and cons honestly, define what scaling means for your unique business, and remember that the journey doesn’t have to be a solo expedition.
